Wise Words From a 5 Year Old

Wise Words From a 5 Year Old

I visited my sister and nieces over the weekend. We ate food, watched ‘You’ve Been Framed’, learnt some spelling and did some drawing together. As bedtime came around the eldest of the two girls, D who is 7, chose I Love You Just The Way You Are as their bedtime story. A short, illustrated, rhyming book that highlights different animal quirks and how they are loved, just the way they are.

After reading to the girls, the eldest told me how another kid at school occasionally comes up to her and pulls chunks of her hair out at break times. I refrained from saying the classic “it’s probably because he fancies you” and instead told her that there is no use in being mean back as it gives him a reason to continue the behavior. She said she’d told teachers and that he continued to do it when they were not around, to this I responded with the idea of standing up for herself, making new friends or even wearing a funky hat to protect her golden locks. At this point, her 5-year-old sister, C, chimes in with “you don’t need them! Just come with me at play, I’ll protect you.” keen to take on the role as new friends and a funky hat. She’s a fierce one, more so than her sister and I wouldn’t put it past her that if someone hurt D, C would have something to say about it.

The girls continued to figured out how to tackle the playground problem, with strong gestures being thrown around by C. They finally came to the unfortunate point that they aren’t always on break at the same time, so C can’t always protect D.

Both girls are gutsy and not afraid to throw curveballs to test the waters, but the remark from C really caught me off guard. I’ve been saying for a while how much she reminds me of myself and it’s so cool to see how tenacious she is and I can’t wait to hear the stories that come from her feistiness.

I am going to be traveling around Germany from the 8th of October for my birthday, so posts will be pretty short and maybe a little irrelevant to Surrounded’s core content for the next week. Expect more random blurts like this rather than structured posts about specific topics. See you properly in a week!
